Czech Christmas dinner 12.12.2010
It has become tradition that I host Czech Christmas dinner every year. This year it is second time before actual Christmas, since December 24 I should be in Patagonia :) As usually I made fish soup, fried carp, potato salad and baked a lot of Czech Christmas cookies - this year 10 kinds! Petra brought cookies that she made and Daniela fried chicken, so we had plenty of food! After dinner we opened presents and watch Czech movie. The only downside of this evening was, that we had to go to work the next day, so we couldn't keep talking forever :)
PHOTOS

Grand Canyon - Rim to Rim to Rim
I don't even know how to start to write about this crazy adventure! I visited Grand Canyon twice before - once from North rim, once from South rim, this time I saw both rims in 24 hours! It is about 14 miles from North rim to the river and they say you shouldn't even try to do it down and up in one day, it is about 9.5 miles from South rim and they discourage you from doing it in one day, well I did both in 17.5 hours! :)
We (Juergen and I) left on Wednesday afternoon and drove to Grand Canyon, with the time change in Arizona we arrived around 4 am (3 am California time), so obviously we didn't get much sleep on the way. Before we got ready to start our run/hike it was about 4.20 California time (I will write about Ca time since I didn't change the time on my watch), still dark. We started to run down, slowly, it was really cold, but clear night, there was snowstorm the day before, so we needed crampons for the beginning of the trail. I made beginner's mistake with my camel-bag which froze and I didn't have easy access to my water, but I tried to drink as much I could and eat often. I found on one website that is good to eat about 100 calories per hour and I tried to follow this advice (I ate about 2300 calories total). After about 5.5 miles we put away our headlamps and started to enjoy the beautiful views around us! At 6.50 we arrived to the Colorado river, first part behind us and it supposed to be the easiest one! But from the downhill running we started to feel our calves. Running on the canyon floor was beautiful! Moving between the rocks with views to the snowy north rim was just amazing. We run/hiked about 8 miles before it started to get steep again. Last 2-3 miles before the trailhead was covered by snow so it made movement very difficult, but we made it in 8.5 hours! 23.5 miles behind us, and 23.5 miles in front of us! It was 1 pm (2 pm local time) and we were down with water (almost no water on North rim trail). We started to run downhill, I was little bit without energy - my camel bag froze again and I didn't eat enough, but when we stopped at Roaring Springs to get more water and eat I got my energy back and I practically run next 6 miles without stopping! We got to the Colorado river at 5.20 pm - 13 hours after we left. It was already dark and we had ahead of us the last part of our adventure - about 9.5 miles uphill! To get to Indian Garden campground wasn't that bad yet, but the last 4,5 miles to the top was one of the most difficult in my life. I was out of energy, sick of all the energy bars and gels, but still going step by step to the top. Made it at 9.50 pm - 17.5 hours after we left!
PHOTOS
Uz bylo zase tma a my jsme meli pred sebou posledni cast naseho dobrodruzstvi - asi 15 km dokopce!

Utah 2. - 10. 10. 2010
The first week in October had our school district furlough week, and it would be shame not to use this free time for a trip. My friend Zdenek needed holiday too, so we went for a road trip to Utah. I drove through Utah about 7 years ago and I felt that it would be nice to go back and spend more time hiking in the parks. We started with Antelope canyon, then drove to Monument Valley, Arches, Capitol Reef and finished in Zion.
PHOTOS
Zacali jsme v Antelope Canyon, pak jeli do Monument Valley, Arches, Capitol Reef a nakonec skoncili v Zionu.

Hoover wilderness 4. - 6. 9. 2010
This long Labor day weekend I was supposed to go to Minaret Lakes for backpacking, but everybody who was going with me canceled, so I ended up going with Pavel and Carolina to Hover wilderness just for short backpacking trip. The first day we walked 6 miles to Summit lake, the second day we did about 14 miles day hike to McCabe lake which is actually in Yosemite NP, and the last day we hiked back.

Prvni den jsme sli 9.6 km k Summit lake, druhy den jsme udelali asi 22 km denni vylet k McCabe jezeru, ktere je vlastne v Yosemite NP, a posledni den jsme sesli zpet.

Tuolumne Meadows 21. - 22.8. 2010
This weekend I went to Yosemite - Tuolumne meadows with one meetup group - Bay area mountaineering. It is always great to go with this group, which is fun and full of interesting and nice people. The first day I wander around Spillway lakes, the second one I tried to reach Unicorn peak. Unfortunately the last couple of meters were above my climbing ability, but even without reaching the top I had great weekend.

John Muir Trail 17.7. - 3.8. 2010
John Muir trail is hiking trail that starts in Yosemite National Park, and continues 215 miles through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, John Muir Wilderness, King's Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, and ends at the highest peak in continental United States, Mount Whitney. I discovered backpacking in Sierras Nevada mountains a couple years ago and I just love it. JMT was great opportunity to go for longer trip, to see how beautiful the mountains are in the further destinations where my weekends expedition can't reach. Eric and I , spent 17 days on our feet, but it felt like much less! The scenery was beautiful, the weather great, we went only through one afternoon storm and one day with showers and night with hails. The one downside were mosquitoes, especially in the first half. We ended up our trip sleeping on Mt. Whitney, where was that day so calm weather and beautiful sunset that we couldn't wish for anything better.

John Muir trail je cesta ktera vede z Yosemite NP, a pokracuje 344 km zkrz Adams Wilderness, John Muir Wilderness, King's Canyon National Park, Sequoia National Park, a konci na nejvyssim vrcholu kontinentalnich USA, Mt. Whitney. Vyhledy byly nadherne, pocasi uzasne, prozili jsme jen jednu odpoledni bourku, jeden den s prehankami a noc s kroupami. Jedinne minus byli komari, hlavne v prvni casti. Nasi cestu jsme ukoncili na Mt. Whitney, kde bylo ten den velice klidne pocasi a nadherny zapad slunce, ze jsme si nemohli prat lepsi zakonceni.

We stayed at small hotel in Paris part Montmartre, and visited all the typical places in Paris – Eiffel tower, Champs Elysees Louver, Arch of Triumph, Versailles, and many more. Then we rented a car and drove to the south – Cote de Azure, stopping on our way to see one chateau on Loire. We stay at mobile home at campsite near St. Tropez from where we made day trips to Monaco, Cannes, Nice, etc. Then we again drove back to Paris and took bus and plane back to homes.

Kings Canyon 29. - 31.5. 2010
I visited Kings Canyon only once before and for just a short hike, so this year Memorial Day weekend we - Petra, Miro, Pavel and I - decided to go and explore this beautiful part of Sierras mountains. The first day we hiked up about 6 miles from the bottom of the canyon to Frypan Meadow, the second day we planned to make a day trip to Kennedy pass, but since the trail was covered by snow and we couldn't find it, we just hiked up small hill for better view and then went back to our campsite and relaxed. The third day we walked back to the car using another trail than the first day. On the way back we stopped at Chili's for dinner.

Rafting - Kaweah River 22. - 23. 5. 2010
This year group of 18 went for 5th annual rafting trip at IV+ class Kaweah River near Sequoia NP. As usually we had great time!
Amy, Libor, Jared, Justin and I left on Friday so we can use Saturday for hiking. We went to see Marble Falls in Sequoia NP. In the evening we enjoyed BBQ and campfire while the rest of our group slowly arrived.
The weather this year wasn't the best. It was quite cold and cloudy, but we had great time on the river anyway. None of our rafts ended up up side down, even though each boat lost at least one member in the water for a while.
The weekend finished in restaurant in Los Banos where we had so much food that we almost couldn't leave the place!

Lost Coast
Lost Coast is about 25 mile long trail mainly on beach in Northern part of California which I wanted to do for a while. There were always a couple of problems why it was difficult to organize trip up there, the trail is one way trip, so the shuttle between trailheads needed to be solved and there are couple of places that are not possible to pass in high tide. Also 25 miles walking on beach require usually 3 days to do it.
Having spring break and more time I posted my idea about this backpack on Meetup.com website and found 5 other adventure people who wanted to join for this trip. We were watching the weather forecast quite closely, because rain could make some creeks difficult to cross, but the weather looked OK.... until the day when we left and changed completely! At that time we were already on our way, so rain or not we decided for this amazing backpacking trip.
On Saturday morning paid shuttle took us from the end to the beginning and we started. Knowing that our car is 25 mile away and there is no way back! The headwind was hard and it didn't take too long for rain to start. Walking on beach was really difficult so we were happy to make 8 miles the first day. The weather got better in the afternoon and we had nice day in the end. During the night rain came again. We were trying to wait in the morning with packing and leaving for the rain to stop but in the end we left around 11 am. The forecast said rain for the whole day, but in the end around 2 pm stopped and we had quite nice afternoon. Since we were cold and quite wet we kept walking to keep us warm until we passed the last high tide area and saw the end of our trail. It was around 6 pm and we had about 4 miles to go. Seeing the dry clothes in our cars made us try to finish the backpack. The last mile or two we were walking in dark, but with some moonlight and on black sand beach it had its magic. We got to the car around 9.30 pm and about two minutes after that the rain started again! Great trip!
PHOTOS
Silny vitr foukal proti nam a netrvalo dlouho a zacalo prset. Pocasi se odpoledne trochu umoudrilo a my jsme meli docela pekny den. Vidina sucheho obleceni v aute nas prinutila dokoncit cely vylet. Skvely vylet!

Sequoia NP 27. - 28.3. 2010
Another great weekend in the snow, this time in Sequoia national park! My experience with reaching planned destinations for winter backpacking is not very positive. Since most of the trails are not marked in the winter and since the guessing directions from just looking at the map is not great either, I didn't want to set goal for this weekend, but in the end we (Justin and I ) tried to reach Alta peak, which is quite hard hike even in the summer. For all the mentioned reasons we just found a beautiful spot somewhere on the way with great views and enjoyed the weekend anyway!
PHOTOS

Yosemite 13.-14.3. 2010
This weekend was organize by mountaineering meetup group. On Friday evening about 25 people were supposed to meet at camp 4 and enjoy the winter in Yosemite together. In the end not all 25 people arrived and not all camped. I drove with Martin and Jericho (one member who needed ride) and because it was snowing quite hard on Friday night we decided to get tent cabin in Curry Village and in the end we stayed there even the second night. On Saturday we all went to Dewey Point. Martin and I rented cross country skis. It was great day. The only downside was that we had to be back by 4 pm to return our equipment. In the evening we took our dinner (sausages) and wine form which we made Czech specialty - hot spicy wine and joined the group at the camp by fire. The plan for the next day was to go to Mirror lake and part snowy creek trail, but the camp group changed their decision and we didn't see them that day. Martin did something with his leg when he fell the previous day so we walked really slowly, but in the end we made it to nice lunch spot with great view and we even hiked up little bit more after the lunch. We left Yosemite relatively early, especially considering the fact that the time changed this weekend and we lost one hour! :)

Tento vylet byl organizovany skupinou horolezcu. V patek vecer se melo sejit 25 lidi v Camp 4 a uzit si zimu v Yosemitech dohromady. Nakonec to dopadlo uplne jinak. :)

Vancouver - Olympic Games 13.2. - 21.2. 2010
I always wanted to see Olympic Games so when I found out that I have one week of holidays the same time as the first week of Olympic Games in Vancouver the decision for my holiday destination was easy! On top of that my friend Iva lives there so I had another excuse to go and visit her. I was wondering how busy and crazy it can get in Olympic city, but it wasn't too bad. I went to see Ice hockey (Czech republic against Slovakia), Alpine skiing, Figure skating training and two victory ceremonies. The atmosphere in Ice hockey was amazing, I had great tickets and I sat just a couple of meters from our Czech players and the ice. At the Figure skating I saw our skater Brezina and our dance couple and my favorite Evgeni Plushenko. The trip to see Alpine skiing was mainly to get out to Whistler and feel the atmosphere at such a race since none of Czech athletes are very good. The victory ceremonies had great atmosphere especially since both times I went there was and Canadian athlete who won gold medal! And of course checked out the Olympic flame and just walked around the city. The weather was great and I had great time.

Yosemite - Badger Pass - Glacier point
One day, browsing Facebook I saw on Honza's page photos from his cross country skiing trip from Badger pass to Glacier point and that day I decided that I need to do the same trip! Jeff and I left on Saturday early morning - 3 am for Yosemite, around 9 am we were starting our 10.5 mile trip to Glacier point. Jeff hadn't been on cross country skies before, so it took him a while to get the rhythm and also his skies didn't have much wax on them so it was really hard work for him. We made it to the Glacier point around 4 pm, found a place for camping with a beautiful view and after dinner and melting snow we went to bed - I think around 8 pm! The next morning we woke up to a beautiful day. After breakfast and necessary photo taking we left around 10 pm for our way back. The journey back felt much more easier and we arrived back to Badger pass around 2 pm.

Jeff a ja jsme vyjeli v sobotu brzy rano - 3 do Yosemit, kolem 9 rano jsme zacinali nas 17 kim vyjezd na Glacier point.

Saturday Dec 19th - Wednesday Dec 23rd
The travel to Tanzania was our first adventure. Even the original itinerary was crazy: San Francisco - Charlotte - Washington DC - Addis Abbaba - Kilimanjaro, but it got even crazier. The day we left there was big snowstorm on the east coast, so we got stucked over night in Charlotte. The next day we managed to fly to Washington DC and spent one night on the airport there. The next morning we should be rebooked on flight to Ethiopia, but we were told we are not in the system! We got stand by ticket, but luckily got on the plane. This plane was about 6 hours late so we also missed plane to Kilimanjaro! Since there is only one flight per day, we had to stay over night in Addis Abbaba too. After 5 days of travel we arrived finaly to Tanzania on Wednesday! The Zara agency took us to our hotel, where we got ready for our next day Kilimanjaro trip.
Sobota 19. Prosince - Streda 23.
Thursday Dec 24th - Wednesday Dec 30thWe started our 7-day Kilimanjaro hike on Christmas Eve. We decided for the longer version to be able to aclimatize to high altitude. Despite this I still had a problem with the elevation and had to take altitude sickness pill before summit day. In our group were two more people - Matthias from Germany/Dubai and Jonathan from Chicago. Jonathan was underprepared, Mathias had extra equipment, so they formed nice couple in the end :) We chose this time for hiking up Kili because it was supposed to be beginning of dry season - we had rain every single day.... starting from about 10 -11 am, so we learned to get up early, so we walk as little as we have to in the rain. The temperature wasn't too cold, just wet, only the summit day was pretty chilly and we had to move not to get too cold. We had with us (4 people) 1 guide, 2 assistant guides, 1 cook, 1 assistant cook and 12 porters - little bit excesive, but we didn't have choice. They were carrying our tents, equipment, food, dining tent, special toilet, and who know what else :)
Ctvrtek 24. Prosince - Streda 30. Prosince

Thursday Dec 31th - Sunday Jan 3rd
Since we arrived two days later than we supposed to, we didn't have time to drive to Serengeti NP. As we were told it wasn't famous big migration time anyway, so what we saw in the other parks was pretty much the same as we would there. We visited Tarangire NP, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara NP. All the places were amazing and we were quite lucky to see many animals very close - elephants, giraffs, zebras, lions, hyenas, etc. We travelled just two of us in a car with opened roof and one driver who was also our guide and he stopped whenewer we wanted to take any photos. The last day we went for little walk around the area, which was nice to get feel for the place not only from the car.
Ctvrtek 31. Prosince - Nedele 3. Ledna
Jelikoz jsme prijeli o dva dny pozdeji nez jsme meli, nemeli jsme cas zajet do Serengeti NP. Navstivili jsme Tarangire NP, Ngorongor Crater a Lake Manyara NP. Vsechny mista byly uzasne a my jsme meli taky velke stesti, ze jsme videli hodne zvirat z velke blizkosti - slony, zirafy, zebry, lvi, hyeny, atd.
Sunday Jan 3rd - Monday Jan 4th
One of our biggest adventures was our flights back. When somebody rebooked our tickets on the way to Africa he or she managed to "exchanged" our tickets for the flights back. Nobody was able to figure out for what.....! Thanks to long pressing dialogs and nice people in Ethiopian Airlines we flew from Kili to Addis Abbaba and to Washington practically without any ticket (have to be said that from Addis to Washington in business class, so not so bad for such a long flight!). In Wasthington US airways managed to find our lost tickets and since our reservation for the last flight actually didn't disappeared, we could finish our flight as planned!
Nedele 3. Ledna - Pondeli 4. Ledna
Jeden z nasich nevetsich dobrodruzstvi byl let zpet. Diky dlouhemu presvedcovani a hodnym lidem v Ethiopskych aerolinkach jsme leteli z Kilimanjara do Addis Ababa a do Washintonu prakticky bez listku (z Addis do Washingtonu v prvni tride, a to nebylo vubec spatne na takovy dlouhy let!).
