St. Nicolas Party - Mikulasska party (12-8-2007)

In the Czech republic St. Nicolas comes 6th of December and brings sweets and small present to all children. Even though we are in Bay area far away from the Czech republic, St. Nicolas still came to visit czech and slovak children! My friend Petra dressed up as St. Nicolas, one of dads changed into devil and I put on angel costum.

V Cechach prichazi Mikulas 6 prosince a prinasi detem sladkosti a male darky.

On Friday we had a farewell party for Petr and Eva. Petr is leaving on Thursday to go back to Czech Republic, Eva is moving south close to LA to start University in January. The party was great, many people came, unfortunatelly among them one or more thieves, who took my wallet, Katka's camera and maybe more.

Sequoia NP - The Lakes Trail (11/3 - 11/4 - 07)

I love backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada mountains, so even quite cold weather couldn't stop me organizing a trip to Sequoia national park. Our group of 7 people - Efik, Petr, Miro, Igor, David, Jeff (the only non-Czech speaker) and I left about 10 pm on Friday and somehow (mainly thanks to David's driving and to getting lost a few times... without coment :-)) we arrived at 3 am. We quickly put up our three tents on one site, which I found out the next morning was not really camping site at all, but the ranger that arrieved was nice and spared us the fine.
In the morning we sorted out our backpacks, got our permits and at around noon departed for our adventure. The trail to the Pear lake was 6.2 miles long, passing three other lakes, and had one "nice but a little bit dangerous" section. This part is called the Watchtower and it is closed during winter. The reason is that the path is quite narrow just next to the cliff to the valley and when covered with snow it can be really slippery. With a lot of small stops mainly for taking pictures, we arrived at our destination - Pear Lake - at 6 pm. The Pear Lake trail is one of the most popular backpacking destinations, but probably thanks the cold weather in November, we found only one other group there - and no big suprise that they were from Czech republic too! We made a quick dinner, Petr washed himself in the lake and at about 8.30 we went to sleep. The night wasn't so cold, the wind brought some clouds, so we had a good night's sleep. In the morning two more crazy guys went for a swim in the lake - Jeff and David and of course again Petr. The lake and the surrounding mountains it were so beautiful we decided to climb little bit above the lake and enjoy the beautiful views. On the way back we stopped at Heather Lake for lunch and we arrived back at about 5 - 6 pm. This weekend the time changed so we gained an extra hour! Before we left the park we stopped at The General Sherman Tree - the largest (by volume) tree in the world. Our last adventure was our gas situation - there weren't any gas stations inside the park and our tank indicated that we were almost empty... we made it to the gas station just 7 km before out gas ran out. Dinner at Denny's was our last stop and we arrived home around midnight!

Tura k Pear Lake byla 6.2 mile dlouha, prochazela kolem dalsich tri jezer a vedla take jednim trochu nebezpecnim mistem i kdyz s nadhernymi vyhledy.

Halloween Run (10-27-07)

I won the women's first place in a 5Km run !!! I have to admit it wasn't a big race, but still I feel good about it! Of course it helped that for first place there was a $25 prize. And since I had only about 5 hours sleep the night before (late from Halloween party) I think it is quite a good achievement. My time was about 25 minutes!
PHOTOS
Samozrejme me povzbuzovalo vedomi, ze prvni dostane $25.

Monterey Bay (10-21-07)

Our day started really early - we left about at 6 am for Marina near Monterey (about a 1 hour drive) because there was the grand opening of a new REI store. I found out that first 200 people get a free water bottle with a gift card ranging from $5 to $100. We arrived at about 7.30 and nobody was there. It was little bit chilly, so we stayed in the car, but when at about 8 am other people appeared, we took our chairs and positioned ourselves in front of the entrance. The store opened at 11 am, so we had to wait about 3 hours! In the end it wasn't so bad. We got into a discussion with one man who we thought was the child of some Czech immigrants, but then we found out he was "just" an American who lived in the Czech Republic for 3 years and he spoke very good Czech! While we were waiting we got lessons in using a compass, a free cap, and quite a nice breakfast - tea, coffee, juice, banana and muffins. At 11 am we got our free water bottle, all of us with a $5 gift card, except for Tublu who got $25! The store wasn't very big and it didn't have any sales, so we left and went to the 17 mile Drive which is a private drive with several famout golf courses. It has many beautiful views of the ocean. Our next stop after this drive was Monterey Aquarium - we had two guest cards which we actually managed to use for 4 of us (Petra wanted to study, so she didn't go). We did a quick tour around the Aquarium, and saw the main exhibits. This was our last stop - we were pretty exhausted after such a long day with so early a start, so we left for home. Unfortunately I was driving otherwise I would have followed the example of the rest of the car and slept practically the whole way home!
PHOTOS

Nas den zacal velice brzy - vyrazili jsme kolem 6 rano do mesta Marina, pobliz Monterey (asi pres hodinu cesty), protoze tam bylo slavnostni oterverni obchodu REI. Behem cekani jsme dostali lekci v zachazeni s kompasem, cepici a docela dobrou snidani - caj, kavu, dzus, banan a muffin. V 11 hodin jsme dostali zminovanou lahev zdarma a poukazku - vsichni 5 dolaru, krome Tublu, ktery dostal 25!

Castle Rock State Park (10-20-07)

Castle Rock State park is one of my favorite places for hiking close by Los Gatos. The loop that I did on Saturday I have hiked about twice before, but this time it was organized by a hiking group, so I thought that it might be good to meet new people. Most of the people in the group seemed to be new to the area and looking for company to do activities with. I found out that one of the girls has a Czech dad, but she doesn't speak Czech. Her father was born here (grandparents are both from Prague), so he is practically American. The only time he becomes Czech again is the during Winter Olympic Games when he supports the Czech national hokey team!

Mount Tamalpais State Park (10 - 14 - 07)

Mount Tamalpais State Park is north of San Francisco near Stinson beach. Petra, Petr, Tublu and I left about 9.30 unsure how the weather was going to be like. In Los Gatos it was nice and sunny, but only a few miles furthur in Cupertino it was already foggy and cold. And Stinson beach didn't look much different when we got there. We choose a 7-mile trail which took us quite high into the hills so we could see all the clouds above the sea. After we got back we stopped for a while at the beach and then drove to Palo Alto for a nice dinner at a Mexican restaurant and dessert.
PHOTOS

Mount Tamalpais State Park is severne od San Franciska nedaleko od plaze Stinson.

Henry Cowell State Park (10 - 7 - 07)

Henry Cowell State park is located in the hills between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. The trails go mostly through woods so it wasn't a surprise that we chose a trail around a big tree called "Big Ben". The hike was quite nice, about 7 miles long - actually who knows how long it was, since description of the trail wasn't very clear and we might easily have taken the wrong way a few times. It wouldn't matter so much if we didn't have to rush back because one of my friends needed to get to work on time.
PHOTOS

Tura byla pomerne hezka, kolem 7 mil - i kdyz vlastne kdo vi, kolik jsme usli, protoze popis cesty nebyl uplne jednoznacny a my jsme mohli spatne odbocit nekolikrat. To by az tak nevadilo, kdybychom nepospichali nazpet, protoze jedna kamaradka musela do prace.

Bridge to Bride run (9-30-07)

The Glide Floss Bridge to Bridge run in San Francisco goes between the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. This was second year I ran it. It is a beautiful race around the edge of the city along the Marina and Crissy Field, with fabulous views and especially this year the sun was shinning from the beginning. The race ends up at the Presidio and there are lots of freebies and a band playing.

Yosemite - Grand Canyon of Tuolumne Meadows (9/8 - 9/11 - 07)

This was a great backpacking trip lasting for four full days. We left on Friday evening and arrived at Yosemite Tuolumne Meadows sometime after midnignt. Even though we didn't reserved any camping, we found a spot for the night. For the first two days we had group of 6 - Katka, Daniela, Ryan, Jeff, Martin and I. We started off easy - Saturday's goal was only to reach the Glen Aulin campground, which is only about 6 miles and practically all downhill. On Sunday we split up - Katka, Daniela, Ryan and Jeff headed home, while Martin and I continued. Before we split, the others walked with Martin and I a little further to see more of the Canyon.
About one hour after we divided up, Martin and I saw the first bear. I didn't see bear before in the wild so it was a really exciting moment! And I didn't even know at that point that I would see two more bears the following day! Monday we continued going down the canyon along the river, but getting prepared mentally for big climb out of the canyon at the end. To make the climb even tougher, there wasn't any water from the point we left the Tuolumne river till we got to the top. So we filled all our bottles and containers and started the climb. It was there that I heard some noise behind me and turned around and about 60 meters behind us was a big bear running downhill! So we continued climbing and I was thinking that this area shouldn't be so full of bears since they need water too.... and then I saw the third one! After we scared the bear off, we found that we had reached small platform with a beautiful view over Hetch Hetchy Reservoir - this is where we stayed overnight. On Sunday we finished the climb, this time without seeing any more bears, had lunch by Harden Lake and drove home! It was an unbeliavable 4 days backpacking in Yosemite!
Photos

Pro me to byly to neuveritelne nadherne ctyri dny v Yosemitech!

Kolkata (8/14 - 8/18 - 07)

We arrieved to Kolkata 14th of August, the evening before the wedding. 15th of August is India's Independence day and apparently the biggest celebrations are held in Kolkata, but before we could get out to the city the parades had finished. Subby's cousins took us to see a little bit of Kolkata, but how we soon found out that except for Queen Victoria's memorial there weren't much to see.The wedding started in the evening. We arrived at Subby's house and from there we drove to the hall were all the ceremonies were held. The second day in Kolkata we visited the Indian Museum which didn't make much of an impression, and in the evening we went again to Subby's house for more wedding ceremonies. The third day we dedicated to shopping and in the evening we joined the wedding party for another wedding dinner. Saturday was our last day in Kolkata, so we spent out time getting ready to fly back. It was also the last day of the wedding - the reception.

Do Kolkaty jsem prijeli 14. Srpna, vecer pred svatbou.
Svatba zacala vecer. Prijeli jsem k Sabbymu domu a odtud jsme odjeli do domu, kde probehly vsechny ceremonie. Byl to take posledni den svatby, ktera koncila svatebni hostinou.

Jaipur and Udaipur (8/9 - 8/14 -07)

Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, was another beautiful place that we visited. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and one of the better planned cities in India. We started the day with an elephant ride up to the Amber Fort, which was an experience by itself. Then we spent some time exploring Amber Fort, where I learned that the Fort was built with all of the best items from the whole word - even some crystal from Czechoslovakia. City Palace and the Jantar Mantar observatory were on our list after lunch. The observatory was especially interesting - many huge sun clocks with a precision of 2 minutes in local time! In Jaipur my first "stomach" problem started so unfortunately I couldn't enjoy the nice dinner with local dancing.
To cover the distance to Udaipur from Jaipur on India's roads would have taken us about 8 hours, so we decided to fly. We had about 3 days in the city of Udaipur. The first day was supposed to be free time, for the second and third we had planned seesighting, but unfortunately our guide compressed everything into the first day. I was overcomming my stomach problem so this didn't help either. We started with the temple Jagdish Mandir and the City Palace which is a favorite place for weddings, then we left the city and drove to Eklingji, a complex of temples, where we wern't alowed to take any photos. Then we drove a little bit further and visited an old tample - Nagda Temple. On the way back we stopped at Saheliyon-ki-Bari Gardens. After this "marathon" we found out that our guide secured two free days for himself ... Now we understood why he didn't let us stay anywhere for too long and his most often words were "come, come". Over the next two days, we visited the Monsoon palace, built on the hill but occupied just for a few months after they found that it was difficult to get water up there. Then we went back to City Palace and took a ride on the lake. This was the end of our sightseeing - now we were off to Kolkata and Subby's wedding.

Jaipur and Udaipur

Prvni den melo byt volno, druhy a treti den pak byly planovane prohlidky mesta a okoli.

Delhi and Agra (Taj Mahal) (8/5 - 8/9 -07)

Brian, Reginald and I spent about 3 days in Dehli, the capital of India. My first impressions of India weren't very positive - a lot of poor people, small children and young mothers with babies begging at every coner and at every red light. Driving was an adventure by itself, even though there are lines on the roads, nobody actually uses them - in a three lane road at least five cars will try to fit next to each other!!!
Agra is the place where the famous Taj Mahal is located and it was one of the best destinations in our trip. We spent a few hours in the Taj Mahal, taking photos from every angle and looking at how the colors change depending on the sun. The second site was the Agra Fort, where the builder of Taj Mahal, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, was put in jail. He was put here by his own son, because he wanted to build a second Taj Mahal all over again on the other side of the river, this time with black marble, for himself.

Movies from India

Brian, Reginald a ja jsme stravily 3 dny v Dehli, hlavnim meste Indie.

Hong Kong (8/4 - 07)

Subby, Brian, Reginald and I had about 12 hours in Hong Kong on our way to India. It is a very exciting, clean and western looking city, although actually I couldn't really compare since Hong Kong was the first city in Asia I have visited, but I had to remind myself all the time that I am on a different continent! We took the bus up to the Big Buddha, walked around the downtown and took a ferry a few times between the islands. Before we went back to the aiport we ate in a local restaurant and saw Hong Kong in its night colors.

Hong Kong a Delhi

Vsude bida a spina.
