Royal Gorge 3. - 4. 3. 2012

Cross country skiing wasn't my favorite activity when I was a child, somehow now I prefer it over downhill skiing. When Bay area backpacking buddies announced a cabin trip I didn't have to think twice to sign up. 12 of us stayed at cabin near Royal Gorge, resort for cross country skiing. This is one thing that I am having problem to adjust to actually. Back at home cross country skiing was just like hiking in the winter with skis, here it was more like exercise and we had to pay to use the trail. Everybody got quite tired after a few hours skiing and after big dinner we all went to sleep quite early. The next day we went for short snowshoeing trip and cleaned up the cabin. Since we were passing Czech restaurant in Concord on our way home we made a stop for dinner there also.

Jako dite jsem lyzovani na bezkach moc rada nemela, ted najednou jim dam prednost pred sjezdovkami. Kdyz jeden z online meetupu poradal vylet na chatu na hory, nemusela jsem dvakrat premyslet a hned jsem se zapsala. 12 nas bylo na chate blizko Royal Gorge, coz je stredisko s trasami na bezky. Toto je jedna z veci, na kterou mam problem si zvyknout. Doma se slo na bezky jako na vyslap jen ze to bylo v zime a jelo se na bezkach, tady to je vice jako cviceni a musi se platit za pouzivani cest. Kadeho par hodin lyzovani unavilo a tak jsme vsichni po velke veceri sli brzo spat. Druhy den jsem si udelali kratky vylet na sneznicich a uklidili chatu. Jelikoz jsme jeli po ceste domu kolem ceske restaurace v Concordu, nemohli jsme se nezastavit na veceri.

Snowcamping with group 6

Last year I took snowcamping course with Sierra Club and it was really fun! This year I went again but as an assistant leader for group 6. We had a quite small group, and with 3 people who couldn't come we ended up with number 13. Also 6 out of 9 students were my friends or friends of my friends, so it was double fun. We went to the Boreal area near Lake Tahoe. This winter didn't bring much snow so far, but we managed to find a place where almost every student made snow trench. The weather was nice also so everybody had a great time! Let just hope that by next trip we will get more snow so we can build snow caves!

Minuly rok jsem prosla super kurzem zimniho kempovani se Sirra club. Tento rok jsem se vydala znovu, ale tentokrat jako asistent vedouciho skupiny 6. Meli jsem pomerne malou skupinu, 3 lidi nemohli prijit a tak nas bylo celkem 13. K tomu navic 6 z 9 studentu byli moji kamaradi a nebo kamaradi kamaradu, tak ze sranda byla dvojnasobna. Sli jsme do oblasti Boreal pobliz Lake Tahoe. Letosni zima neprinesla zatim zadnou velkou snehovou nadilku, ale i tak se nam podarilo najit misto, kde temer kazky student vykopal snehovy zakop. Pocasi take spolupracovalo a tak si to kazdy uzival. Jen ted doufejme, ze do pristiho vyletu napadne vice snehu abychom mohli vykopat snehovou jeskyni!

Yosemite - Dewey Point 28. - 29.1. 2012

Trip to Dewey Point in Yosemite seems to becoming my annual trip. Last two years I went on cross country skis with friends, this year I joined meetup and we all marched on snowshoes. We stayed on Friday and Saturday in Yosemite bug hostel, about 40 miles before entrance to the park. On Saturday we all drove to Badger pass and from here went as a group to the beautiful spot with a view to Yosemite valley. On Sunday about half of people went to Ahwahnee hotel for brunch. I used the time to walk around the valley.

Vylet na Dewey point v Yosemitech se stava mym kazdorocnim vyletem. Minule dva roky jsem tam byla na bezkach s kamarady, tento rok jsem se pridala k hromadne organizovane skupine a vsichni jsme pochodovali na sneznicich. V patecni a sobotni noc jsem se ubytovali v hostelu Yosemite Bug, asi 40 mil od vstupu do Yosemite. V sobotu rano jsme vsichni vyjeli na Badger pass a odtud se cela skupina vydala k Dewey point odkud je uzasny vyhled do Yosemitskeho udoli. V nedeli si asi polovina lidi zasla na brzky obed do hotelu Ahwahnee, ja jsem vyuzila tohoto casu na prochazku po udoli.

Yosemite without snow 14. - 15.1. 2012

Last year we had unusual amount of snow on mountains, this year we are having the opposite. Tioga road is usually closed this time of the year and it is almost impossible to see Tenaya lake frozen. I am one of those lucky people who has Monday off on Martin Luther King weekend so I went with Petra, Miro and Jamsheed to Yosemite. We left San Jose around 5 am and drove straight to Tuolumne meadows. First we stopped at Tenaya lake and tested the ice, then we drove to Tioga pass and went to Mt. Dana. I felt problem with altitude almost from the beginning, but even with big headache I didn't turn away and reach the 13 061 ft summit. We got back to cars around 6 pm just with last light, because we had small adventure with looking for backpack that Miro left on his way up. We stayed at heated tents in Curry village over night and since we were in the valley, we decided for hike from Mirror lake on Sunday. Mirror lake is more like Mirror puddle, but the views when we started to climb from the valley opposite Half dome were again beautiful. We took it easy and after short hike up we turned around and went back. We got back to Bay area around 10 pm.

Minuly rok bylo neobvykle mnoho snehu na horach, tento rok je to naopak. Silnice Tioga je vetsinou uzavrena v tuto dobu a tak je temer nemozne videt zamrzle jezero Tenaya. Ja patrim k tem stastlivcum, co maji volno v pondeli po vikendu Martina Luthera Kinga a tak jsem se vydala s Petrou, Mirem a Jamsheedem do Yosemit. Vyrazili jsme kolem 5 rano primo do Tuolumne meadows. Nejdrive jsme se zastavili u jezere Tenaya, kde jsem vyzkouseli led, pak jsme jeli primo k prusmyku Tioga a odtud na horu Dana. Problem s nadmorskou vyskou jsem citila uz temer od pocatku, ale i pres velkou bolest hlavy jsem vyslapala na vrchol ve vysce 3981 m n. m. K autu jsem se vratili kolem 18 hodiny s poslednimi zbytky svetla, to hlavne proto, ze po ceste zpet jsme zazili male dobrodruzstvi, kdyz jsem hledali Miruv batoh, ktery si odlozil po ceste nahoru. Prespali jsme ve vyhrivanych stanech v Curry Village a jelikoz jsme byli ve valley, rozhodli jsme se druhy den pro vyslap kolem jezera Mirror. Jezero Mirror bylo vice mene kaluzi, ale vyhledy kdyz jsme zacali stoupat z udoli naproti Half domu byly uzasne. Udelali jsem si jen pohodovy vyslap a brzy se vratili zpet. Domu jsem se dostali kolem 22 hodiny vecer.

Costa Rica 17. - 31.12. 2011

This winter break I almost didn't go anywhere. I thought that after traveling for month in Asia this summer and trip to Hawaii in October I should probably stay at home and save money, but as my dad used to say, money will be still here when we won't, so I forgot about saving and took off. With very little time for planning I decided for Costa Rica, it is quite close, it has warm weather (actually too warm for me) and a lot of activities. I left with my friend Christina in the evening of December 17th (we flew red eye) and we arrived back about 1 hour before New Year eve midnight. In the two weeks we traveled around Costa Rica quite a bit, we stayed at San Jose, Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio and Cahuita. We went canyoning, rafting, zip-lining, hiking, snorkeling, swimming (in two oceans Pacific and Atlantic) and had a lot of fun!

Tuto zimu jsem malem nikam nejela. Rikala jsem si, ze po mesici cestovani v lete po Asii a vyletu na Hawaii v rijnu bych asi mela zustat doma a trochu setrit, ale jak muj tatinek rikal, penize tady budou i kdyz my uz ne, tak jsem se rozhodla nekam vyrazit. Nebylo moc casu na planovani a tak jsem se rozhodla pro Kostariku, je pomerne bli,zko, je tam teplo (na me az moc) a da se tem delat spousta veci. Odletely jsem s kamaradkou Christinou vecer 17. prosince (letely jsme pres noc) a vratily jsme se asi hodinu pred pulnoci na Sylvestra. Behem dvou tydnu jsme Kostariku docela procestovaly, zastavily jsme se v San Jose, Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio a Cahuita. Slezaly jsme kanon, sly raftovat, na zip-lines, delaly jsme vyslapy, snorchlovaly a plavaly (ve dvou oceanech - Tichem a Antlantskem) ale hlavne jsme si dovolenou poradne uzivaly.

Predcasne vanoce 10. - 11. 12. 2011

It is becoming a tradition that I celebrate Christmas a little bit earlier. The reason is that I usually travel over the Christmas break, this year I am off to Costa Rica. The advantage of this early celebration is that I don't have to deal with crowds in stores to buy food for my dinner. As a Czech tradition we had fried carp and potato salad, for desert we have Czech Christmas cookies, this year I made 11 kinds! It is not also totally Czech dinner anymore, since Daniela and Martin married non Czech/Slovak people we introducing our tradition to people from Ecuador and Japan :)
I wanted celebrate Christmas with my non Czech friends also, so the second day I invited other friends for small Christmas party.

Uz je tradici, ze slavim vanoce o neco drive. Duvodem je me cestovani pres vanocni prazdniny, tento rok jedu do Costa Riky. Vyhodou brzkeho slaveni je ze nemusim bojovat s davy v obchodech. Jako tradicne jsme meli k veceri smazeneho kapra a bramborovy salat, jako zakusek bylo vanocni cukrovi, tento rok jsem udelala 11 druhu! A uz nemame ani uplne ceskou veceri, jelikoz Daniela a Martin si vzali "cizince", ukazujeme tak nasi tradici i lidem z Eqvadoru a Japonska :)
Chtela jsem take oslavit vanoce s mymi neceskymi kamarady a tak jsem na druhy den udelala malou vanocni party.

Thanksgiving 24. - 26. 12. 2011

I think this was after a few years first Thanksgiving that I stayed at home. This holiday doesn't really have any meaning to me since I wasn't born in USA and since this is family holiday and all my family is in Europe. This year after busy summer and October traveling I stayed in San Jose. I prepared with my friend Christina non traditional Thanksgiving dinner and celebrated this holiday with a few friends.
On Saturday we drove to Bear Valley for one day for short snowshoeing and to visit my friend Katka and her family.

Myslim, ze toto bylo prvni Dikuvzdani po nekolika letech, co jsem zustala doma a nikam nevyrazila. Tyto svatky nemaji pro mne vpodstate zadny vyznam, jelikoz jsem se v USA nenarodila a hlavne moje cela rodina zije v Evrope. Tento rok po velkem cestovani v lete a rijnu jsem proto zustala v San Jose. Pripravila jsem s kamaradkou Christinou netradicni veceri na dikuvzdani a oslavila jsem svatky s nekolika kamarady.
V sobotu jsme pak jeli do Bear Valley na sneznice a navstivit kamaradku Katku a jeji rodinu.
